Sonalie Figueiras-The Xennial Green Queen

Sonalie Figueiras began her Green Queen media journey 10 years ago in Hong Kong to fill a much needed void- eco-wellness; bringing health and wellness together in harmony with the planet. Green Queen is now the largest eco-wellness impact media platform in Asia-winning awards on the way. In Part 1 of our 2 part interview, Sonalie and I take a diversion down the path of empathy and its role in either thriving or languishing societies. Empathy may well be, along with adaptability, one of the best skills we can arm our children with to thrive in a world where robots and computers will handle many of today's tasks. Sonalie is a 2x TedX speaker and in Generation T's 2019 leadership class. As Editor-In-Chief, she curates content for some of the most exciting new developments in plant-based and novel meat, sustainable beauty, zero-waste living, environmental activism and much more.

Podcast Summary

Sonalie Figueiras and I get into her background and what it was like growing up as a 3rd culture kid in Hong Kong.  Sonalie is 1/2 French and 1/2 Indian, born and raised in Hong Kong.  She did not have many other mixed-race friends and this was sometimes a cause of distress in not always feeling like she fit in.

She explains that bullying she experienced in her formative teenage years may have shaped her to be a more empathetic person it was also an experience that caused her significant pain.  She gives huge credit to her mom for giving her a great foundation and acknowledging her upper-middle class privilege along the way.

Green Queen started as a blog to help others in Hong Kong find important resources for living a healthier life.  Green Queen hit a powerful nerve and filled a void for many in Hong Kong who wanted to live clean; find vegetarian restaurants, recipes and products, attend yoga classes and learn more about important local environmental issues.  It quickly grew to be a pan-asian and award winning offering.

Her experience as a Xennial a term I had not yet come across- gave her unique insight into both Generation X-who were heavily 80’s and “me me me” oriented- and the Millennial’s who had been royally screwed by coming of age during a global financial crisis.

Empathy is the theme that runs through this podcast and is an unexpected diversion that I believe you listeners will absolutely benefit from.  There is a rawness to her story that explains her willingness to share her health and well-being “finds” in Hong Kong with anyone out there who wanted to hear.

Sonalie is doing incredible work via The Green Queen media platform and has literally created an industry- ECO-Wellness!

The Green Queen platform is a “must read” for anyone who wants to learn about the biggest trends of the in plant-based food, health, well-being, environmentalism AND the investment opportunities that will accompany them!
